Mommyhood: Weeks 4 to 8

It’s unbelievable to me that Emery was born 8 weeks ago today, and that his 2 month birthday is just around the corner. Time sure does fly.

By the way, do you calculate months by the number of weeks or by the actual date? Because based on date, he’s not officially 2 months old until 9/21. Either way, little man is getting olllldddd and fast. And since his official 2 month update will be written soon (on the 21st!), I’m going to talk about my own mommyhood adventures for a bit here.

Best Buddies

Let’s just get on with it and start with the nitty gritty: BFing! The stress surrounding breastfeeding early on was very high. Not producing enough milk, producing too much –> engorgement, nipple tears, pain, pump drama, milk storage, etc. I did lots of social media/ internet research on the topic trying to look for answers, none of which I could ever find. Turns out, BFing is different for literally every mother out there. Super. I don’t do especially well without clear-cut answers. Luckily, I had heard from other mommies that hitting the 6 week mark is a milestone on the BFing front. For whatever reason, things just seem to get easier then. And like “they” said, easier they got! I think it is all a matter of getting into a routine with your little one. Learning their cues. Figuring out what they want and when they want it. And burping SOON after feedings. Good lord, the spit up. There were many a time Emery would have a massive spit up attack just moments after a good feeding, causing Mommy to have a mini breakdown. Talk about feeling inadequate. Anyways, we seem to be working much better as a team now and hopefully that continues. All I want is a healthy growing babe!

Moby time

When I was in Michigan last week, I was asked by my friends what the biggest adjustment has been since Emery was born. Besides the obvious change in sleeping patterns, I really couldn’t come up with a good answer. Weird, huh? My cousin Nancy and friend Lora both told me that when their kids were born, the thing they missed most was the sudden lack of spontaneity. No longer was a quick hop in the car possible. Simple errands were long gone. Everything that was once simple was now a big to-do. Once they pointed that out, I realized that that was it! That has by far been my biggest adjustment. And how did I not realize it?! I suppose I did, I just couldn’t put it into words. I have tried to overcome these moments by getting out of the house regularly. Whether it’s taking a trip down to our new house, or running to the post office for stamps. Fresh air is very refreshing and can work wonders on a sour mood. My husband has also been a great help in this department, taking care of E while I run out every now and then. I think all mommies should have at least one hour a day to themselves to prevent insanity from forming :) Despite my frequent feelings of confinement, I absolutely love being at home with Emery and thank my lucky stars for everyday I get to spend watching him grow.

Breezy

At my 6 week OB followup appointment a few weeks back, I got clearance from my doctor to start exercising again. Hooray! I had been waiting (and waiting) to hear those sweet words for quite a few weeks. Even though I wasn’t truly motivated and lacked energy to do much more than eat and sleep. However, when it came to my return to running, I had one (technically two) major concern(s),,,

Seriously. If it weren’t for the fact that my chest has turned into a freakshow since baby, I probably would’ve started running sooner. But it has. And so I’ve waited. And when concerns arise, I turn to my Twitter friends for help. I was given many good sports bra recommendations but ended up going with the Ta-Ta Tamer from Lululemon. I have one that I wore pre-baby, so I knew it was a good supportive choice. I also (thanx to more recs) made a point to feed E before any physical activity to reduce any potential discomfort up top.

I took my selection to the treadmill earlier this week and surprisingly everything went well. Sure there was still a lot going on upstairs and my breathing/ endurance is AWFUL from such an extended exercise hiatus, but my body in general felt good. Not too loosey goosey like I had expected. I ran again yesterday, doing (slow) intervals on the treadmill, and once again felt good. It was certainly a confidence booster that my body is cooperating and gets me excited about my return to running. Though I don’t plan on signing up for any long races anytime soon, I think a 5k might be in my future this fall if all goes well. We will see!

Oh! To aid in my fitness return, I’m also currently participating in Best Body Bootcamp with Tina Reale. I signed up for this last summer though didn’t fully complete it as I was also in marathon training mode. So I’m excited to use this training format again and hopefully see some major results at the end of 8 weeks!

Let’s see,,, beyond that stuff, things are honestly great. I’m loving being a mommy. My husband is a wonderful father. Our families are incredibly supportive. And mommyhood is just beyond good. I’m a lucky girl.
